There are bright days ahead for Solar PV power in Mexico. During the country’s first long-term electricity auction in 2015, Solar PV made a strong statement, representing 81 percent of the awarded bids, with 1.7GW of installed capacity. The second and third long-term auctions saw solar power awarded 1.84GW and 1.3GW, respectively. On Sept. 10, 2018, CENACE announced that between September 2018 and June 2019, Mexico’s energy mix will welcome an additional 12,429MW of installed capacity into its energy mix, 35 percent of which will be solar-powered. Solar PV technology’s scalability and adaptability also make it an attractive option for the residential, commercial and industrial niches. In its latest interconnection contracts report, CRE estimates that the interconnections will increase tenfold, from 40,109 to 479,054, by 2022. Mexico’s solar PV market is poised to become the platform for showcasing new solar technologies, including the latest generation of solar trackers, bifacial modules, string inverters, energy storage solutions, energy management software and automated maintenance systems. Join the discussion on Mexico’s solar future to capitalize on the opportunities that are emerging.
